Belize Tourism Board honors luxury private island

Ambergris Caye, Belize - January 2007 - Cayo Espanto, a private island off the coast of Belize , was named Hotel of the Year by the Belize Tourism Board at the annual National Tourism Awards ceremony held last week in Belize City. "Considering the growing number of high-end hotels and resorts in Belize, we are sincerely honored to receive this award," stated Cayo Espanto's initial developer and creator, Jeff Gram. "Our dedicated employees, many who have been with us since the very beginning, deserve to be recognized for their exemplary service and attention to detail. I am so proud of each and every one, especially General Managers, Rosita and Ralf Sturmberg, who attended the festivities to accept this award from the Minister of Tourism, The Honorable Godfrey Smith," noted Gram.

Cayo Espanto has earned many other accolades in the past few years. In 2006, Patrick Houghton, executive chef for Cayo Espanto, was awarded the prestigious title of "Professional Chef of the Year" at the 5 th Annual Taste of Belize Competition. Chef Houghton has been Cayo Espanto's culinary master since 2004 and is certainly a key contributor to the exquisite level of service provided on the island. Every day, the chef and his staff confer privately with each guest regarding their menu selections and all meals are customized individually and served by a private butler anywhere on the island.

In other praises, Cayo Espanto was named a "Hideaway of The Year" by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report the year it opened in 1998. Since then, it has been designated as "Editor's Choice" by Conde Nast Traveller and "Best of The Best" by The Robb Report. It has been featured on the cover of more travel magazines than any other private island resort, gracing the covers of Conde Nast Traveller, Travel and Leisure and twice on Caribbean Travel and Life . Most recently, Cayo Espanto was included among ISLANDS Magazine's recommendations for "Top Ten Escapes in the World."

Cayo Espanto rests in the calm waters of the Western Caribbean, just off the coast of Belize. It is located southwest of Ambergris Caye and three miles from the San Pedro Airport . Guests can fly fish right outside their door, opt for scuba diving or snorkeling excursions to the second largest barrier reef in the world, just 20 minutes away or hop on a boat or a plane and play 18 holes of golf on a nearby island. Although Belize is less than two hours from Miami and Houston and is easily accessible via Delta Airlines, Continental Airlines and American Airlines, it remains virtually undiscovered.
