CAYO ESPANTO GETS A CHIC NEW LOOK
- Custom furniture and fabrics give this secluded island retreat a modern feel
Guests staying at Cayo Espanto, a private island off the coast of Belize, can now enjoy spectacular furnishings, custom-crafted by the world-renowned Los Angeles firm, Darrell Schmitt Design Associates. Mr. Schmitt and his team headed by Barry Sullivan personally oversaw the renovations and enhancements at Cayo Espanto, have enjoyed a career as an interior designer for more than 30 years, with projects ranging from private residences to some of the world's most acclaimed hotels and spas. Of course, the essence of what makes Cayo Espanto the jewel box of the Caribbean and one of the most exclusive boutique resorts in the world is the concept of ultimate luxury and I feel that the interior design has a great deal to do with the whole ambiance, states owner Jeff Gram.
It is very important to make sure all aspects of the resort are above and beyond our guest's expectations. When I met with Darrell Schmitt, I immediately knew that he would have the vision to create interiors that would exceed the expectations of our most discerning international traveler. Whether lingering in the king size bed dressed with Yves Delorme linens or lounging on the new custom furniture, guests are sure to take note of the thoughtfully-appointed details. The design is pristine and simple, with a seamless flow of indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing for the beautiful natural surroundings to become a part of the interiors.

Cayo Espanto rests in the calm waters of the Western Caribbean, just off the coast of Belize. It is located southwest of Ambergris Caye just three miles from the San Pedro Airport. Each five-star villa offers the ultimate in attentive service with private butler, personal chef and a staff ratio of two to one, while at the same time embodying the fantasy of being all alone on a beautiful deserted island.
Guests can fly fish right outside their door, opt for scuba diving or snorkeling excursions just 20 minutes away at the second largest barrier reef in the world, or hop on a boat or a plane and play 18 holes of golf on a nearby island. Although Belize is less than two hours from Miami and Houston and is easily accessible via Delta Airlines, Continental Airlines and American Airlines, it remains virtually undiscovered. Direct flights are available from Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, Houston, Dallas and Los Angeles.
